Bob Schutt Republican Gunnison County Commissioner

Gunnison County voters have an opportunity to elect a man we all can be proud to call our County Commissioner.  We should be thankful that a man of his character, life experience, decision-making capabilities, vision, education, service and leadership has stepped up to serve all of us in Gunnison County.  Bob Schutt has qualities, characteristics and proven experience that have prepared him very well for this very important job.

Bob’s entire life has been one of service to his fellow man (and women, to be politically correct). This is why we were disheartened to see a former county commissioner reduce Bob Schutt down to a “place holder.” Does demeaning a person’s entire life’s work of service give his opponent’s supporters the green light to dismiss Bob as a truly viable candidate for county commissioner? And, the same county commissioner believes that because Bob travels outside the county and state he should be dismissed as a viable candidate? Yes, he and his wife take a vacation, he travels to do volunteer work for Shriner’s Hospital for Children and yes, when family medical emergencies take them out of state should that disqualify him as a viable candidate? And, this same county commissioner believes that someone has to be born, raised and own a business in our valley to be able to competently, earnestly and fairly serve our citizens? Was this county commissioner born and raised here and own a business in Gunnison County? We don’t think he was held to that standard when he ran for office.    And, the fact that Bob hasn’t been a politician isn’t necessarily a bad thing. At some point elected officials may become politicians. We don’t think Bob Schutt will ever become a politician, even if he was in office for decades. That’s just not who he is. He has been driven by a life of service to others..

Briefly, for those who don’t know him, here’s a short bio: graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Vietnam decorated combat fighter pilot; activated U.S. Army reservist, Orthopaedic Surgeon during Gulf War One, received the Meritorious Service Medal, retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. After Vietnam he attended medical school at Texas Tech University School of Medicine, completing his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Colorado.  He attended Harvard for his business education, was Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Texas Tech University School of Medicine where he managed the department budget, personnel, oversaw research, clinical practice, education to resident physicians and medical students as well as the operation of a Level 1 trauma center.  Today, Bob works part time as a physician and surgeon with local Alpine Orthopaedics.

Bob also continues his volunteer work at the Shriners Hospitals for Children.  He is a member of the CB/Mt. CB Rotary, is on the Board of the Crested Butte Music Festival and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Gunnison Valley Hospital System where he advocates for accessibility and affordability of quality healthcare.  More than most, he knows what he’s talking about on this topic.

As a recreationist, Bob understands the importance of taking care of public lands, the impact on our tourism economy and ensuring its sustainability.  He also believes in ensuring our children receive a quality education in a safe environment, conducive to learning whether it’s preparing for college or other career choices.

Local workforce housing has gotten to critical status and he looks forward to sharing his approach which includes lower density and greater diversification of location. This is one area that seems to be evading a solid solution by our elected officials and his fresh eyes will be an asset in helping move this forward.  He also knows that we must have the appropriate economic growth and thriving small business to keep our communities healthy. Elected officials don’t create business but they can create an environment in which businesses can prosper and succeed.  Bob understands our issues very well, having been very involved in our county for over 30 years.

Bob Schutt is the right person at the right time to lead on and contribute to the many serious issues facing our county. We are asking that voters not make this extremely important decision based on “who you know,” but rather on electing the candidate who will bring the very best experience and fresh ideas to the table.  Please join us in electing Bob Schutt, Gunnison County Commissioner.
